Self Defense on the Hill

The UCLA Martial Arts Program provides self defense workshops for residents on the hill at UCLA. This past Tuesday Lance Wisdom (Ninjutsu instructor at UCLA) and a group of assistant instructors (Mark Hargrove, Jean-Paul Goncalves and Jon Lee) provided a workshop for the students at Dykstra Hall.

Students learn key points on topics like sexual assault defense, punch defenses and knife attack defenses. How to understand the psychological and physiological affects of “violence of action” and to avoid reaching “crime scene 2” are what Lance and his team emphasize in the workshops they provide to the UCLA students.

One of the most important topics we find to be essential in educating students on is sexual assault. Paul McCarthy (Hapkido and Self Defense instructor) has been teaching and educating sexual assault defense for over 6 years at various universities. Statistics show that college women are 4 times more likely to be sexually assaulted than non college women, and for this reason we provide them with tools not only on how to avoid, but how to defend themselves if they ever are faced with these situations. Part of this education includes a handout on sexual assault which includes the resources UCLA provides to aid student safety (Campus Safety Escort service, bus and transportation services,  UCLA and local counseling centers etc…)
